In my quest to uncover the hidden history of Nebula Island, I met an old man in a tavern through a tip. He gave me a surprising testimony.
Mr. Marcellos, can you tell me about when you went to Nebula Island and what you did there?
(Coughing) Th-that was the day that everything went wrong for me. A group of stonemasons were summoned. I was one of them. (Clears throat) We... Erm... We had a special assignment from the court wizard. It was a royal order. Who could disobey King Travis? Besides, the wizard said there would be a great reward. We took him at his word and boarded the ship.
When we arrived at the fog-shrouded island, the whole place was filled with something eerie and strange. We went underground, and there... There stood these terrifying stone soldiers. They had no souls, but I could sense some sort of murderous energy from them. My task was to repair them, and I, well, I did my best. (Coughing) Little did I know... it was a trap.
Did something bad happen? Can you tell me about what happened?
(Clears throat) The day all the work was done, the court wizard threw a celebration for us. The air in the banquet hall was strangely heavy.
I couldn't shake a feeling of unease, so I went to do a final inspection of the stone soldiers I had repaired, and... (Coughing) The great hall where the soldiers were gathered was empty. Suddenly I heard screams coming from the banquet hall. I-I ran toward it. As I was running, screams filled my ears, and I saw...
My colleagues were lying there, covered in blood. The stone soldiers were searching for survivors like demonic machines, and behind them was the court wizard. With an expressionless look on his face, he was barking orders to the soldiers and counting the bodies. In that moment, everything became clear. He planned to kill us all when we were finished. I frantically fled, even risking a leap off a cliff into the sea. The waves threatened to swallow me up, but I felt I'd be better off drowning. I was tossed around by the waves and luckily rescued by a merchant ship passing nearby, but I've never been the same since... It's a nightmare I can't escape.
I can't imagine how traumatizing that event must have been. It's unbelievable. But why do you think the wizard did what he did at the time?
I... (Coughing) I still don't know the exact reason, but I do know that those stone soldiers weren't just defending our kingdom. They were trying to hide or protect something on the island. Everything we saw on the island was a reason for us to die.
I was just a stonemason. Polishing stones was all I did. But it led me and my colleagues into tragedy, and now I'm... I'm a drunken beggar with nothing.
I want to know the truth, but I'm afraid it will threaten me again. I shudder at the memory of it... Maybe it would have been better if I had ended up in that sea. (Coughing)
Now that I've told you everything I can remember, can you buy me another drink?
